History

The original portion of the Claytonian building was constructed in 1910. In the 1950s, the external units were added and made into a hunting and fishing lodge called the “Wilderness Motel”. The house and rooms were redecorated with local historical themes in the late 1980s by the owner at the time, Karolyn McArthor. She then began running it as a Bed & Breakfast, called the “Cklaytonian” with a “K” in the name for “Karolyn”. In 1996, Eileen & Don Christianson bought the property and moved from California to Clayton. They took over the business and ran it as the “Claytonian Inn Bed & Breakfast”. Over the years, Eileens’ hospitality drew many guests to become frequent visitors. In 2019, Eileen stopped renting rooms to relax and enjoy her retirement. After her husband, Don passed away in the fall of 2021, Eileen placed the “Claytonian” up for sale. Over the years, Eileen loved her time in the tiny town hosting guest from across the country. However, she was ready to get away from the Iowa winters. In October of 2022, she sold the Inn and moved to to South Carolina to enjoy the coastal area of Myrtle Beach.

Meet Your Host!

Welcome!

My name is Kaitlyn, I bought the “Claytonian Inn” this past fall. I have lived here in Clayton my whole life. One of my favorite things about growing up in this town has always been the history. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to purchase the “Claytonian” and now to be able to share everything I love about the area with it's visitors! You can book your stay on this website through the "View All Properties" tab or by filling out the "Contact Us" form. Don't hesitate to call with any questions!
